Art Exhibit - REQUIEM
Assemblages - Relics of memory
November 1 - 22, 2009 St. Peter Church
|
|
Anytime humans face loss, what is ordinary
often takes on new and significant meaning.
Often as people sift through the rubble of a
natural disaster, fragments of what once was
become sacred and holy relics of memory.
The works in this exhibit were created out
of such fragments, things which would ordinarily
be thrown away, discarded as useless
and insignificant. They speak of the pain and the preciousness of our
history together and the feelings we share. They are metaphors which
challenge any and all power systems which fail to value the sacred in
what is human.
Woven through these works are prayers and chants
from the ancient Liturgy for the Dead, prayers for the world and our
world, anywhere humanity is suffering the horrible pain of being discarded
and devalued.

Art and Theology 1
Monday Evenings: November 2– 9- 16
Rev. Robert J. Marrone
7:15– 9:00 PM Cosgrove Center
|

| For the majority of its history, what has most often shaped Christian faith and belief was not texts, creeds or dogmas, but art in
all its various forms. For at least fifteen
hundred years, in a largely illiterate culture,
the symbolic and the visual were the
main conduits for believers to discover and
access the holy and to make tangible what
was essentially beyond all physical reality or human control.
These three sessions will explore the nature of symbol and the power of
the visual in shaping and expressing faith, both individually and communally,
from the first iconic representations, through the great Romanesque
and Gothic cathedrals and their amazing sculpture, to the dawn of the
Renaissance.

Saint Peter’s is delighted to welcome back Cantus, the brilliant male
chorus which, since its founding in 1995, has gained an international
reputation as one of America’s finest male vocal ensembles. Cantus
grew out of a group of friends at St. Olaf College in Northfield,
Minnesota, a school world famous for its choral music tradition.
The group has made over 15 recordings, and tours extensively
throughout the US and Europe. In 2009 Cantus was awarded Chorus
America’s most prestigious award, The Margaret Hillis Award for Choral
Excellence. The ensemble performs a vast repertoire from early
polyphony to spirituals and contemporary compositions.
Since its first concert here, Cantus has been anxious to return to
perform in the splendid acoustic of St. Peter Church. This concert
celebrates the 150th anniversary of the church’s dedication, and the
important place it has had in the musical life of our city.

| One of the great gifts of our parish is the number of wonderful
artists who are members of the community. This exhibit will
feature works by these various artists, expressions of contemporary
faith, hope and love which can both delight and challenge
us as we honor the gift of art in our parish and as we
struggle in this time of change, loss and possibility. |
