Education Programs ... 2009-10 |
Art and Theology 1
Monday Evenings: November 2– 9- 16
Rev. Robert J. Marrone
7:15– 9:00 PM Cosgrove Center
|
|
For the majority of its history, what has most often shaped Christian faith and belief was not texts, creeds or dogmas, but art in
all its various forms. For at least fifteen
hundred years, in a largely illiterate culture,
the symbolic and the visual were the
main conduits for believers to discover and
access the holy and to make tangible what
was essentially beyond all physical reality or human control.
These three sessions will explore the nature of symbol and the power of
the visual in shaping and expressing faith, both individually and communally,
from the first iconic representations, through the great Romanesque
and Gothic cathedrals and their amazing sculpture, to the dawn of the
Renaissance.

THE REFORMING GOSPELS:
ANOTHER LOOK AT EUCHARISTIC ORIGINS
SATURDAY NOVEMBER 7, 2009
COSGROVE CENTER 9:30 AM– 3:00 PM
|
|
Few theologians today combine such outstanding
scholarship with the pastoral sensitivity and
insight that Gordon Lathrop has displayed during his
distinguished career. He is Professor of Liturgy
Emeritus at the Lutheran Theological Seminary in
Philadelphia and for the past three years been Visiting
Professor of Liturgical Studies at Yale Divinity School. He received
a doctorate in theology from Katholieke Universitiet, Nijmegan
(Netherlands).
Dr. Lathrop has served as a pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America for 36 years in both Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. He is the author of Holy Things: A Liturgical Theology, Holy People: A Liturgical Ecclesiology, Holy Ground: A Liturgical Cosmology
and Central Things: Worship in Word and Sacrament. He has lectured
widely in the United States and abroad and is the associate
editor of and a frequent contributor to the journal Worship. He was
the tenth president of the North American Academy of Liturgy.
Dr. Lathrop has consistently shown a passion for opening
the borders which separate Christians, in order to encourage an
honest and fruitful conversation concerning the centrality of our
common baptism as a source of both liturgical and ecclesiological
common ground. In his day-long seminar at St. Peter’s, Dr.
Lathrop will pose the following questions: What are the Gospels
For? What did they have to say to the ancient Christian assemblies
and what do they have to say to us today? How are they documents
of reform? What happens when they are read? What insight can we
gain from the diverse local Eucharistic meal practices of the primitive
church? This workshop will address these and other questions
with lecture and communal discussion.

We are most pleased to welcome back Paul
Philibert to guide us in our parish day of reflection.
A member of the Dominican Community, Paul is a
prolific lecturer, author and preacher. He was the Visiting Professor in the Chair of Pastoral Theology
at The University of Fribourg from 2004-2007, and has taught at
The Aquinas Institute, Notre Dame University and the Catholic
University of America. He is the author of numerous books and
over sixty-five articles and book chapters. His most recent work is
The Priesthood of the Faithful: Key to a Living Church.
He holds a Doctorate
from the Catholic University of America. Paul will consider
the following themes: thanksgiving, providence and trust, especially as
they relate to the priestly character of all the baptized and their
mission to proclaim God’s kingdom. In his words: “This retreat
occurs at a crossroads moment in the lives of the Saint Peter community.
It is a memorable time for thanksgiving, for grieving and
for hoping together. For two decades St. Peter Parish has represented
the coming together (synchronicity) of deep spiritual hungers,
religious beauty, a community of faith that really shares, responsible
stewardship of the church’s spiritual and material goods,
prophetic leadership, powerful preaching, and a gracious liturgy
that embodies all the elements in prayer, song, and self-giving .”
